October Widget Pack - U.A.C. Error
Published on October 2, 2007 By EnzoMatrixLT In Bug Reports

 Hey All,

I downloaded October Widget Pack and once I start October Calendar Set I get an Windows error that states:

"Warning: Unable to access performance counters while User Account Control is enabled.

Due to security precautions built in to Windows Vista, certain performance meters may not be functional while U.A.C. is enabled."

I am running Windows XP SP2 and not Vista. I have never heard of User Account Control, and have no idea how to disable it in order to run the performance counter. I am using the WB theme "OctoberWB" and would like to run the Widgets that go with this theme. I am not encountering this problem with other performance meters that come with some other Dexktop X Widgets. This is all the information that I have, except that it has caused my OS to crash on start up. I removed the Widget and the referance to it in my Start Up.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. Also, has anyone else encountered this problem with this Widget? Thanks a LOT!

I'd like to help you if I can - no one else has stated they had this problem but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

What version of desktopx are you using ? Latest version ?

Also...have tried any of my other Meter widgets - they use the same scripts.
It will be easier to try to solve the problem if I knew it was the meter script conflicting with your system or this particular widget.

Please name a few that do work for you.

That is why I'm asking him what version of DX he is using. I rolled back to previous version - the current version is quite buggy and has some dll's missing for some reason.

Hello All,
First, thanks for all the answers, I really appreciate everyone's time and effort. Next, I am using Desktop X 3.49f [rc].017. If there is another version that is more dependable, please let me know.... and how do I roll back to that version (I am kind of new to Object Desktop). Finally, I have used a few other Widgets; Eon, 9_3 Aero, Vista sidebar (does it too), Silica (does not do it), and Clear View. Sorry, but I am not sure who made these, off hand.
I have tried to figure out how to turn off U.A.C., and found this command (secpol.msc) which brings up the Local Security Settings... but it all looks like Greek to me. I am at a loss as to how to get the 'meters' to work. I would like to use system meters, think that it would come in handy.
If anyone has any ideas, or suggestions, I am open to all advice and information. Again, thanks to everyone for offering to help. I really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Enzo

The biggest problem here is that you DON'T have UAC.  It's Vista only.  There-in lies the problem

Zubaz, I couldn't agree more with:

"The biggest problem here is that you DON'T have UAC. It's Vista only. There-in lies the problem”

However, when I use the command to bring up the U.A.C. configuration panel (secpol.msc) it does come up! Will the wonders of MS OSs never cease! See, I think that it is because I have 'Live One Care" installed on my XP SP2 and somehow (in their infinite wisdom) it installs U.A.C. on XP. That is just my best guess, bottom line is that U.A.C. IS running on my XP installation and it is keeping me from using these fine Widgets on my system. I have muddled through this 'Local Security Settings' console, but really can not find anything that applies to 'Performance Meters' or 'System Monitoring'.
As if that is not fun enough, I have found that; SOME system monitoring widgets DO run without the error message, some Widgets run- but only after you dismiss this error message, and the October Widget Meters just plain do not run I just get the cryptic error message. Now isn't that more interesting than chewing broken glass? I think that the best thing I can do, is come up with a listing of which Widgets (that I am using); Run without errors, Run but with errors, and Do not run at all. That way the fine people that make these widgets might get a handle on WHICH scripts are getting nuked by MS, and which aren't.
Although, I am still wondering if there is a version of Desktop X that this does not happen at ALL with. If that is the case; 1) I am going to roll back to that version 2) Someone would need to take a look at HOW the newest version is getting it's information (from XP) and maybe modify that to the way the older version does with greater success. Or am I just over thinking this?
Now; Fairyy~, Zubaz, vStyler, & Frogboy I would like to extend my heart felt "Thanks!" for your time and efforts. I am new to this community, but I can see already that it is a FINE community and I am honored to be a member. Thank you very much, to everyone that has taken the time to come to my aid. Everyone has been so very helpful and supportive it is just awesome. You guys (I mean that 'non-gender' in case someone here is not of the 'male' gender, I do not want to offend), ROCK! With this kind of support I am sure to be using DX and all the Object Desktop products for many years to come.

Many Grateful Returns,
Enzo

Silica Network does.
Brio XP and October in XP using DX 3.20.044 No CPU or In/Out data in either.
No network preferences tab.

using the Stardock Central Browser (aka SDC) - you can right click on an app and choose 'archive' - this will make a backup copy - that way if you run a newer version and it doesn't work = uninstall that version and use SDC to restore the archive
